On her passing Ross Tighe, long time Club Secretary & Club member, said this about Shirley;
Shirley Bullen was a foundation member of Dubbo Jazz Club and from those early days was a very willing worker and a valued member. She was always available to attend tickets sales at the Mini Fests, Festivals, Concerts, Garden Parties or whatever. Shirley also sold raffle tickets to raise money for these events and walked the CBD distributing posters in numerous business houses to advertise the aforementioned events. In addition to this she was always in the front line when it came to decorating our venues for the many festivals.
Shirley was a bright, happy person and an avid Trad Jazz supporter, attending many festivals at Parkes, Forbes, Wagga and elsewhere. Due to her friendly outgoing nature and work commitment to our club she became well known and liked by many of Australia’s top jazz muso’s who performed at our club and festivals over the years. When Ben Jones became our Dubbo Jazz Club Patron in 2005, Geoff De La Lande and Shirley Bullen were made Member Patrons of our club and held these positions up until the time of their passing.
Shirley only ceased her work commitment to our club when she became very ill in 2010. Her health improved sufficiently for Terri to bring her to the 2012 Festival in a wheel chair and she had a ball. Shirley was a great lady who gave a huge contribution to Dubbo Jazz Club and will be sadly missed by all who were fortunate to know her.
Dubbo Jazz is pleased to announce that to celebrate our 25th Anniversary, the very first Geoff De la Lande Scholarship will be awarded at the Macquarie Conservatorium Annual Awards Concert on Sunday 15 November at 4pm at the Conservatorium, corner of Bultje and darling St Dubbo.
The scholarship is jointly sponsored with assistance of Colour Copy Shop in Dubbo and has been established in honour of Geoff De la Lande. Dubbo Jazz Club Inc was formed in late 1990 by a small group of enthusiasts, driven by Dr. Stephen Jewell, Geoff De La Lande and Warwick Blowes. Geoff, an avid trombonist ,was the first club president, a position he held for six years and he was also a sponsor for ten years. Geoff passed away in 2103.
The scholarship one of many offered by the Conservatorium is to support the tuition of a brass or other player with a willingness to play jazz music in Dubbo, evidenced through existing membership of a jazz group, jazz ensemble or big band, and/or a developing interest and potential for jazz, plus ability and commitment to his/her instrument.
Concert tickets are $25 family of 4, $10 for adults and $5 students and can be obtained at the office on 02 6884 6686 or firstname.lastname@example.org
