No experience Necessary. Swing dancing originated in amongst African American populations in the 1920s as a social partner dance. It was popularised during the big band era of the 30s and 40s and continues in popularity to today. It’s fun to dance and exciting to watch.
The Canberra Swing Katz workshops are designed to get you up and dancing a.s.a.p. No previous experience is required. You will learn the basic steps and fundamental leading-following techniques you need to look good on the dance floor. There will be more advanced teaching for those who already have experience. You don’t need to bring a partner (though it helps if you can) and flat, comfy shoes are best. The workshops will take place in the Function Centre at Dundullimal Homestead.
You can do one or both workshops, or do the first and then decide to join in for the second. If you take both workshops you get complimentary entry to the Big Band evening at the Golf Club featuring Greg Poppleton & the Bakelite Broadcasters, TraXion, Moochers and The Double Shadows, seating at the front of the stage next to the dance floor and dance shows by the Canberra Swing Katz. Food and drinks are available at the Golf Club.

This is the Canberra Swing Katz’ second year at the Dubbo Jazz Festival. Their workshops last year were well attended and received great feedback. With the motto ‘All the Cats Join In’, we’re all about fun, friends and great dancing. With a touch of vintage flavour, we love to bring the dance, music and style of the 1920s-50s to today with a view to creating choice and opportunities for swing dancing and building a fun-loving community, we invite you to join in!
